Robert Deming has been a Fredericksburg resident for 20 years. He has a day job as a financial advisor, but when he is not thinking about money, he is either walking at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area or writing stories set there. He began writing in 2000 & discovered a talent for creating real characters in interesting situations. Robert’s first novel, Enchanted Rock Red, was released December 2011. The second in that series, Enchanted Rock Blue(s), was released September 2012, & he has started Enchanted Rock White(tail). You can find copies of his 2 recent books at Artisans at Rocky Hill, & can find Robert signing copies during First Friday Art Walk.
Most of the places in the story are real places, & some of the people are real people. As Robert says, “many times it is easier to copy a real person rather than make someone up from scratch.” Clarice, the vulture in Enchanted Rock Red, was created through hours of observation and study. Although many of these Cathartes aura live at The Rock in the warmer times of year, he did have to get inside her head; not science, but good storytelling. Blue(s) includes a Felis concolor as a character.
The real world of Enchanted Rock SNA is not quite as exciting as the stories in these novels, but it remains a wildly popular and much loved part of the Lone Star State. You will know and appreciate The Rock in a new way after reading these stories, and have a real desire to see the place for yourself.
Robert has also completed AWOL 21, A T-38 pilot’s story, set in 1980 at a US Air Force pilot training base. The story is not autobiographical, but includes truth and beauty as perceived from the cockpit of both a T-38 and a KC-135.
